“What are we going to do?” Becca said behind Jesse as he hurried toward the wheelhouse.

“I don’t know,” he said and opened the wheelhouse door. He looked at her. “Stay close to Elsa and the crew. Get behind one of the machine guns if you can.”

She snorted. “Machine guns? Me?”

“Yeah. Have Elsa or someone show you how to use one before it attacks again.”

Her eyes widened. “Again?”

Jesse nodded. “I’ll be back on the deck soon. Get with Elsa and see if she’ll train you on something. I need to talk to the captain about a new plan.”

“Sure. It’s not like I’ve been drugged for the last couple of hours or anything and he wants me to shoot a goddamn machine gun.” Becca chuckled, waved a dismissive hand at him and walked away.

He didn’t want to leave her in the hands of Russian monster hunters for hire, but he needed to form a better plan with Buckley.

The man himself sat in the captain’s chair.

“We need to come up with a—”

“Plan?” Buckley said. He stared out the window in front of him.

Jesse blinked. “Uh…yeah.” There was something off about Buckley again. “So, we should—”

“You are going to get my children killed.”

Jesse frowned, stunned. He opened his mouth and closed it again.

Buckley swiveled around in the chair to look at Jesse. “I heard gunshots.”

“Those gunshots saved my life.”

“Elsa told me you got Brock killed with your recklessness.”

“What?” Jesse shook his head. “No. Brock saved me.”

Buckley glared at Jesse. “Who shot the creature?”

“He did,” Jesse said. “Then I did to save Elsa.” He glared right back at Buckley. “Look, we’ll capture it if we can, but that plan isn’t working out so well. You lost two of your crew members already.” He glanced at the motion monitor. A large red blob floated slowly around the boat. “We need a new plan.”

“Like what?”

Jesse shook his head. “I’m not sure. That’s why I’m here. So, we can put our heads together and figure something out.” He tapped the monitor. “Hopefully before she attacks again.”

Buckley sighed and nodded. “Okay. What are your thoughts?”

“I think we should make it chase us,” Jesse said. “Wear it out to the point where we can net it and tranquilize it.”

“I can do that,” Buckley said. “Run it for an hour?”

“Start at twenty minutes.” Jesse gestured at the motion monitor. “I don’t want it to lose interest if it can’t catch us.”

“Okay. Slow troll?”

Jesse shook his head. “Let’s go a couple knots faster than we were.” He snapped his fingers as a new thought sprang into his mind. “We give chase and then drift for a couple of minutes. Trigger a hunting response instead of a mindless attack.”

Buckley nodded slowly. “And what if it does attack while we’re drifting?”

“Oh,” Jesse said. “If this plan works I’m planning on it taking the bait.”

“Taking the bait,” Buckley mused.

“Troll for an hour with drifts every ten minutes.” Jesse nodded at the bow. “I’ll have half of the crew there and take the rest to the stern with me.
